Initial situation:
Before the Power BI Skill-Up
The beverage company has already been working with the Power BI analysis platform for some time. As part of an internal training initiative, all departments at Coca Cola receive Power BI Basic training from taod spread over several months.
The two-day training sessions are divided into eight thematic blocks. The introduction to Power BI covers the basic components and functions of the tool, provides materials and inspiration and uses a typical Power BI workflow as an example. The trainer also highlights the differences between working with Excel and Power BI.
Excel continues to be an important data source for Coca Cola's analysis work. Using a case study, ten participants per training course learn how to use the tool with confidence.
Training process for Power BI at Coca Cola
The first day of training focuses on the topics of data transformation, modelling and visualization. There will be an introduction to the ETL tool Power Query and data transformation in the Power Query Editor. This connector tool enables participants to query data from Excel, merge it in Power BI and then edit it.
Employees will also learn about various data models as well as relations, filters and formatting. The first training unit concludes with exercises in visualizations to enable participants to create their first reports independently.
The second training day focuses on the formula language DAX (Data Analysis eXpressions). With DAX, participants can create analytical models without extensive technical knowledge, particularly in the context of Excel and Power BI, where standard functions
and tables from applications are no longer sufficient. As Coca Cola works with extensive data resources in Excel, this topic is given particular attention. For example, existing tables are copied or new tables are created with just a few DAX commands so that the tables can then be used as filters or additional dimensions. In addition, key figures are defined together, which can be used to make comparisons and forecasts.
