Apr 12, 2024

"The BI & Breakfast is a bite of bread, a bite of data, always alternating - sounds delicious."

New and only at taod: The BI & Breakfast Tableau will now take place on the first Tuesday of every month. Denis Hille leads the Community of Practice. As a data consultant, he has been working with the analysis software for around three years, advises customers on setting up their company reporting with Tableau and also provides Tableau training and coaching. In this interview, he talks about his passion for Tableau, the differences to Power BI and shares his favorite hacks with us.

Denis, early morning data analysis with Tableau. Does that taste good?

The BI & Breakfast is a bite of bread roll, a bite of data, always alternating - sounds delicious.

What exactly does the BI & Breakfast concept look like?

The BI & Breakfast is a community of practice for data enthusiasts. Once a month, it serves as an exchange platform where we share our experiences and viewers can place their questions and pain points. My colleague Leon Potthoff is in charge of the Power BI Community, my passion is Tableau. In addition to a main topic, there are always current updates and life hacks for data projects.

You say "for data enthusiasts". For whom is the BI & Breakfast Tableau particularly useful?

For all data lovers, for all those who regularly work with Tableau and want to stay up to date and for all those who are looking for a few little Tableau tricks and hacks.

‍Why areyou enthusiastic about Tableau and not Power BI?

I work with Tableau because it's more intuitive to use, I think it's more attractive and I like to play around with the design. For my taste, it generally has the cooler look and feel. Tableau also focuses on the user experience and it's super easy to create visually appealing and interactive reports that feel like clicking on the web.

Do you see any other major differences between Tableau and Power BI?

Tableau is "easy to use" and offers all kinds of connection options. What's more, you can get ahead very quickly by learning by doing. In my opinion, Power BI has unnecessarily complicated DAX calculations. However, Power BI has the huge Microsoft landscape behind it and therefore benefits from synergies between the individual Microsoft tools.

How long have you been working so intensively with data analysis in general and Tableau in particular?

The topic of data analysis has been with me for a long time, ever since my studies. I studied sports science in my bachelor's degree and international sports management in my master's degree, during which time I worked in team management and sports psychology at TSG Hoffenheim and also wrote my master's thesis there. My contact with data analysis and BI consisted of analyzing player performance data and psychological profiles. I have been working with Tableau on a daily basis for around three years.

Are there any typical questions that you are often asked about data analysis with Tableau?

Can this also be exported regularly?

And what is the answer?

Yes, you can!

Are there any tableau myths that you would like to dispel at BI & Breakfast?

"Tableau looks so angular. Couldn't it be nicer?"

Your favorite hack for Tableau?

Flexible parameters combined with zone visibility.

Do you have a favorite life hack?

Yes of course, buy my favorite shirt in all colors twice.

Better safe than sorry. Maybe you'll show us your favorite shirt in the first CoP on December 5 at 10 a.m. and every first Tuesday of the month thereafter. Are you excited yet?

Ask me again the night before.

I'll do it! Good luck, Denis!
